I have a Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme GamerPCIe card in my Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit desktop.

Recently, I have been having some sound issues. My speakers, headphones, and stereo system that I have hooked up to the computer have been emitting odd noise. When I play music, video, or any sound I can hear the sound, but it the noise is also echoing and crackling, as well as digitized. The most interesting part is that this is not constant. The sound issue will happen for a while, progressively get better, stop altogether, progressively get worse and keep cycling like that.

Some additional information. When I first start my computer, occasionally I will have a loud electronic scream emitted from my speakers after the bios screen when windows starts to load, I believe it is when the start up sound begins to play.

When I use a USB headset I have no problems with the sound at all.

My speakers and analog headset are hooked up to the card directly in the back of the computer. I have also tried using the front headset port but get the same issue. My stereo is hooked up to the card using the optical out. So both output methods are making the same noise issue, meaning it is not just the jacks.

This is all a pretty recent occurrence. The only thing in recent history I can think of that could have changed was that I unplugged everything from my computer, cleaned the area, and dusted my computer, then reattached everything. I thought that perhaps when I reattached things I might have put cables in some new position that they might be getting interference but I have futzed with the cables and moved things around and the audio still has a mind of its own.

I have installed the latest drivers for my card.

I am not sure what else to do. My only guess at this point is that the card is dying since I can't image another good reason for the problem to come and go again and again.

Any other ideas?
