I am afraid you need special equipment to carry a video signal from one to the other. Standard wifi doesnt work that way. Unless I have missed something historic.

It depends upon your TV. For example, my Samsung support Screen Mirroring which allows this sort of remote display from a computer or mobile device with some additional software. Or, have a look at this link for ways to do it, with some additional hardware, with any TV.

I believe it can be done only if both devices are WiDi enabled but when I looked into it most laptops do not support this

I have a smart TV and I used my xbox HDMI cord. I plug my xbox HDMI into my computer (just take the time to fine the right plug to plug it into) it does not matter which end of the HDMI cord you use because both ends can be used either on the computer or laptop. Take the other end of the HDMI cord and plug it into the TV (just take the time to fine the right plug to plug it into). This work for me and I did not spend any money because I had the TV, laptop, and HDMI cord that came from my xbox. I do not believe you need a smart TV you can use a regular one! Good luck

answers here are pretty much outdated... what actually works, if you have a smart TV is a wireless HDMI box.I have this one:
http://www.amazon.com/WruiEDUP-EP-WH3590-Wireless-Trans...

I know its pretty expensive, but there are cheaper ones that work really good too. You just need to search for "wireless HDMI" and lots of devices will pop up.

What this does is transmitt directly between adapters the signal, and the computer and the TV receive them directly as if there was a device connected through an HDMI cable, so there are no compatibility issues with anything, the only thing you need is a computer with HDMI out and a TV with HDMI in. It works in any computer and TV with those connections.

The one I have works great and transmits real HD image AND sound, without any issues. It duplicates the screen on the computer or you can extend the desktop to be able to drag videos to the TV as if it was an independent monitor, for example, and keep using the computer normally.
It works flawlessly because it works by itself for transmitting the signal and it doesnt use wifi, because if you get a device that transfers through wifi you need to have a good wifi router, if you dont it wont work okay.

hope the suggestion works!

You missed something historic. Normal wifi carries data. Video is data. The only need is for an app that manages that data transition.
Youtube has that built in its application.

go to google ,just type "Intel(R) WiDi Update Tool",follow the link ,it will download itself and update what is necessary. After installing open the widi icon,go to settings>general settings>check the "scan for legacy wireless displays" and apply.Done!just scan and then u r ready to go.njoy
