I have a brand new Asus PC with 2TB HDD. Now that all PCs come with no media what do I do to install a 500GB SSD that I bough

You need to get hold of an install disk that matches your operating system and put it on the hard drive,
using the code on the sticker on your pc case.

I did the recovery "create" procedure to a flash drive (64GB). Will that not work to restore the OS to the new SSD? All help is greatly appreciated!

It may or may not work. I'm not familiar with Asus pc's.
Power off and disconnect your internal HDD
Install the SSD and connect it.
Insert the flash drive and boot up to the recovery program.
Follow the prompts to restore or reinstall win8.

The problem may be that the recovery wont install to a drive smaller that what its expecting to see.
