Is my HDD dead?

Hi,

I'll give a diagnosis of what my computer's doing:
My computer has a SSD (60GB) + HDD (2TB)
Boot up is fine and at the correct speed.
But my HDD loses connection sometimes. Here are the triggers that make this happen:
Opening any files takes ages. If I try to access files on my D-drive it's very slow and sometimes doesn't even load. After 5-10 minutes The desktop goes blank, My Computer doesn't show the HDD - all other drives are shown.
Same story for when I try and move a file.

I'm trying to be concrete about whether this is a HDD problem or not. Can you give me some advice on how to make sure it is an HDD problem?

this could be a problem with your HDD. every standard HDD has built in information system which can tell you in advance if its failing. Its called SMART. you can look into your SMART information to see if its really dying.

You can download a software "Crystal Disk Info" to see your smart information from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/CrystalDiskInfo.shtml

It shows your Smart values and the health status of your HDD in a simplified manner. Only remember to deselect any extra bloatware that the software may suggest you during the installation process.

Hi:

This is what it looks like:

Of course, shortly afterwards, the HDD disconnects and is undetectable afterwards

Can anyone give me a diagnosis? The questions I'd like answered are:
1) Are any of the files recoverable?
2) What is the best way to normal function of my computer again?

Thanks for the help guys!

Your HDD has 896 (= 0x380) reallocated sectors.

It also has 1728 (= 0x6C0) "pending" sectors. These are bad sectors that are waiting to be replaced with spares.

Your best chance of data recovery is to clone your drive, sector by sector, with a tool (eg ddrescue freeware) that understands how to work around bad media. Ddrescue keeps a log so that it can resume after an interruption.

To improve your chances of data recovery, you can disable reallocation, but you need to do this via the drive's serial diagnostic port using special commands.

There is definitely some problems with your HDD. The best thing to do is to take your drive to an authorized seagate service center where they have the equipments to recover your data. And if your drive is still under warranty, you don't have to pay them for that and they may give you a new one.

One thing you can try is to check the power and data connections between your motherboard and the hard drive. any loose cable may cause such issue. You can try to connect the HDD to a different SATA port on the motherboard to be sure that there are no problem with the connections.
But if the problems persist then I don't think there is not much of an option left and you better take it to a certified technician get it tested.
