I am currently building a new rig I want to improve upon the performance of just a single HDD is it worth me doing a 3 disk raid 5 setup?

I would do the same thing. I have my 2 ssd in RAID 0 and i just have my 3tb drive as a back up. I dont need to speed up my backup drive.

I wouldn't go for raid in a gaming machine. I found that raid 5 performance with only 3 drives wasn't any better than a single drive and data integrity on raid 0 was patchy at best on hard drives, I cannot speak for raid 0 SSDs as I have never tried it. Personally, I would recommend installing your OS onto an SSD and install your games onto the mechanical hard drives. Whilst it isn't the highest performer it is stable and much better than trying to raid mechanical hard drives.

ok so this is my dilema, i have 3 1tb seagate barracudas with 64mb cache, the option of taking my two seagate barracuda 1tb from my old machine with 32mb cache and the option of buying a ssd, what is the best setup for these and which sata ports should they go into.

List of drives:

3 X 1tb 64mb cache

2 X 1tb 32mb cache

1 X optional SSD upto 256gb (thats all my budget allows now)

1 X Blu-ray / DVD

what setup and which ports?
