Hi. I have a dell inspiron 1520, and I want to put its hard drive in a dell inspiron 1720 and boot off it. When I try to start the 1720 with it it gets blue screen error. I tried using the dell recovery disk with its start up repair, but it says it can't repair automatically. The Hard drive works fine in the 1520.
The problem most likely is that it will not work in the 1720 because you have no drivers installed and are getting driver conflicts. When it boots it is looking for the chipset drivers for the 1520 which is not compatible with the 1720. there is to much of a difference between the two systems for it to work without a reinstall.
Does your Windows install disk give you the option to wipe Windows-only files and reinstall Windows? They usually have the option to do that while keeping user data intact.
Hi. Thanks for the replies. The Dell OS disk only gives the option of upgrade (which is grayed out and not possible), or full reinstall. I wonder if the windows vista proper disk gives this option? I even thought of getting windows 7 and upgrading it while in the 1720 (which would install the correct drivers etc), but found out I can't upgrade from boot, needs to be done after boot, which I can't do.
The think I want to keep is all my programs, which I have long lost the disks for through traveling. I have expensive programs that cost over $1000. So I guess I will keep using the 1520, and forget about the 1720.
