There are many applications claiming to allow recovery of data from any drive that is still spinning. In my experience, they are difficult to use and don't work well. There are companies that will recover data for you but you better put a dollar value on the data you want to recover because the services aren't cheap.

It really depends upon what the damage is to the drive. Physical damage (i.e. circuit board cracked, smoked chips, case is cracked, etc) you have a very low chance of recovering any data from utilities....but the companies that cover data will have a chance of doing it - if you run utilities on the drive - it lowers that chance.

My advice - if it is important data - get the dock, plug it in, and see if you can read the drive. If it doesn't work, how much is the data worth to you? Data companies can charge anywhere from $200 - $1,000 to get that data off your drive (depending upon what they have to do) - and the more things you try, the more costly it will be for them to recover (if even possible) the data.

I help a lot of friends out - and generally, I plug in the drive, it either works or not. I can transfer the data for them if it works. Recovery starts getting iffy, and anyone with important stuff has to make that decision how badly they want the data.
