Hi guys, first time 8320 overclocker... I've been reading the overclock.net guide of bulldozer overclocking...

currently I'm at 4.5 but the cpu seems to be getting quite toasty... I'm going to bump the voltages down a notch and see if it reduces temps a bit.

asus m5a99fx pro 2
8320
290 r9
2x4gb vulcan 2400
alpenfohn k2 mount doom cooler.

Is there anything I can change to make it cooler but retain the same speed or even more? here is current status...

Thanks!

edit: just realised I can only post one picture... will update,

More about : 8320

What case do you have? Your cpu cooler should be able to keep it cool at 4.5. What is the max cpu vcore in HW monitor? Also what temps in 'C did it get up to under load?

Sorry, all of that information apart from case was on screenies...

temps are now at 64 ish after a few minutes of prime and a volt of 1.356
case is a zalman z9 plus with 4 fans
2 push, front and side
2 pull top and back

I've got a couple of ideas of why it's running hot... I may have to replace the thermal paste on it because while installing everything i had to take the heatsink off again in order to plug a cable in (noob) so I have a feeling it'll have airpockets now and will be too thickly spread... does that sound possible?

Also I plan to dremmel a hole in the mobo side of my case so I can get a fan blowing on the back on the cpu socket.

doing a bit of research most people get to 4.5 at around 50~ degrees, I'm starting to think something is up...

You must replace the thermal paste every time you take the cooler off, that is definitely why you are getting those higher temps

I redid it but I don't think I put enough paste on this time... the tube ran out. I'm getting 40~ idle and everytime i run prime it my pc shuts down within seconds.

Does normal thermal paste really need a burn in period? Could that be why I'm getting high temps?

A pea sized dot in the centre of the cpu, did you put that much on? I dont think it needs a burn in period, even if it did it shouldn't be idle at 40 'C. Is the cooler tightly attached equally with each screw?

Yeah, it's snug as it's going to get. There wasn't enough on the cpu... I'm now investing in some decent stuff.

I'll update when I get it on!

Cheers!

Just a note on voltage I've got an 8350 at 4.8GHz and im at +0.125V, might be helpful for you.

Cheers, I'm going to start again I think with my OC's. I'm not really sure where I'm at with it...

on the plus side it seems to idle at 33~ now, which is obviously too high but better than before.

Is that with the new thermal paste?

I've put new thermal paste on and full load at stock it's 36~ degrees, much better than before when it was at 48!

Thanks for your help bluehowell.

Blackbird: why do you continuity brag about your cpu in every 83xx overclocking thread? it's not helpful in the least.

I don't know if something is broken or anything but I'm now getting temps of 48 with this cooler overclocked to only 3.6.

Do you mean 4.6?

i mean 3.6 before i left it it was at 3.8 and around 57 degrees. It 's looking like it's a shit cpu and going to end up on ebay fairly soon!

That's good temps. Try over clocking Slowly. Increase 100 MHz at a time until system is unstqble. Then increase vcore by one point . then test stability again. Repeat until desired frequecy

Keep going until you reach 70C after 15mins prime

4.5 is the highest I can get while staying under 70 degrees. I'm now trying to get my ram to run at a faster speed than 1600 but it won't post in 1866.

any tips? this is the first time I've fiddled with ram timings etc.

I'm also going to try and put all the power saving modes back on as I've reached my limits but it's under 70

I wouldn't adjust ram if i were you, you get very minimal performance gains and can be very difficult to get stable if not using XMP profiles.

I got to 4.6 but decided to stay at 4.5 because the temp difference. The thing is I noticed that my USB ports weren't working properly and I also think(hope) this also has something to do with why my pc hangs at startup with a 2nd harddrive installed. I've read that overclocking can affect usb ports and that like but don't know what I can do about it.

The overclock is stable with stress tests and gaming?

it was "fine" at 4.0 but I found it would go to sleep then wake its self up. I was always asleep at this time so I never knew what it was actually doing.

but yeah it was fine never crashed while I was using it

Thats weird, I don't know why it would affect your harddrive if the OC is stable. What PSU do you have?

Superflower 1000 watt gold fully modular

It's not a power problem then. Reset the CMOS then try it all again.
