Best way to increase internet performance?

I have always had a mediocre connection and speeds, nothing phenomenal. I can browse the web watch videos and stuff with ease but when it comes to (PC) gaming my ping and performance almost always is lacking. For instance, when I used to play MW3 my lag and ping was always moderately high. Even now in BF3 I have a very high ping (350 or so) when other people in my house are online. When I'm the only one on I actually get decent a ping (65) but I almost am never the only one on. For some reason I always feel like my connection can be better. Most prominently I think my router is the main problem. I have a Netgear N600 and have had it for about 3-5 or so years and it seems to do alright. Although one major problem I have is that my family has about three android tablets and they have trouble connecting to the internet sometimes. Sometimes they they'll recognize the connection but won't connect. So I have to restart my router and modem just for them to connect. Also, as of now, (running full duplex)(wired connection) I get 88 ping (no one on) 2.89 mbps down and 0.30 up. Now idk know about other normal connections but I think it's pretty pitiful. Like I said earlier, I think its my router and I'm willing to get a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 if that's what it takes to get a phenomenal connection. Also I don't know if this is the case as well but I do know AT&T is my internet provider. Another thing I forgot to mention earlier is that my router is dual band. So when I go to connect on my iPad or android tablet I can only see one band. My mom's laptop only recognizes one band as well. I went back on Newegg and looked at the reviews of my router and a lot of people seemed to have similar problems. My router also has kind of a weakish range in my opinion. I get one bar at the other end of the house which is only 75 feet or so away. Plus my router is upstairs which is supposed to help so I really don't know.

Any help would be appreciated.

An AC1900 router won't help if you don't have AC adapters or a good ISP to start with. Perhaps your router is a problem, have you connected directly to your modem and run speed tests to see if there is an improvement?

As far as your dual band, do they both have the same SSID or did you make them different so you can control where you connect easier?

No matter what you do, with 2.9/.3 speeds you will not be able to do very well gaming with anything else using bandwidth since you have so little to start. Can you get a better plan from your ISP or perhaps switch to cable modem?

If you go with a new router, get a good dual band like an ASUS RT-N56U and consider adding a wireless AP (actually a good inexpensive TP-Link router...

My SSIDs are named differently. I switched my wired connection to my modem and I got Ping: 37ms Down: 5.48mbps Up: 41mbps.

I also tested my router again (once everyone was off, someone was on the first time)
Ping: 38ms Down: 5.70mbps Up: 0.42mbps
(somewhat of an improvement)

I looked at my router settings and my first network (2.4Ghz) is the same as the other except it's channel is on auto and the econd network (5Ghz) is on 44. Both are on a mode of up to 300 mbps.

The plan I'm on is AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet Elite - D - 6.0 Mbps
it supposed to be the best they've got.

Now it may be my plan now that I think of it.

I would take a look at nearby wireless networks for potential interference if you haven't yet. The free home version of inSSIDer from HERE will let you see the local 2.4 and 5GHz signals if run on a PC with a dual frequency adapter.

Also look to see the width of your 2.4GHz wireless, many routers use a 40MHz wide channel with the up to 300Mbps setting, which can make you more prone to interference as it will use two non-overlapping channels.
