It's embarrassing to admit, but the problem was caused by a trojan. I haven't been running Malwarebytes recently, and evidently I should have been. I called Sony, and for 50 bucks a young woman technician ran through the problem with me. Nothing showed up on her diagnostic, but she saw that I had Malwarebytes and ran it for me. Bingo. The she blasted it away with the same software. So, once again, my problem was basically user error. But if anyone else starts getting that volume bar problem (which slowly gets worse and worse), please check to make sure you don't have an alien life form in your computer.
