I have a 7870 XT and when I am playing games, obviously the fan spins up. I use MSI Afterburner to do some overclocking and keep the auto fan profile that it uses.
I figured out that the whining occurs right around 60% fan speed by looking at the graphs in Afterburner.
Anyone know what causes this? Is this a legitimate reason to send it in for RMA? Im not sure they even make these cards anymore. If my card is damaged beyond repair, what are they going to send me back? And also how long am i without a card for?
My other thought is to just get a new card, RMA that thing, and then sell the new one when it comes back.
I have one of those GPUs and it does not have the same issue. Check the fan for any debris or excessive dust. Also, make sure you don't have any wires touching the GPU that could be vibrating at a certain resonance (causing the sound).
If all else fails, you could RMA the GPU. Sapphire could replace the heatsink/fan or send you a refurbed or even an upgraded GPU, only they can answer that question for you.
I emailed Sapphire and they said there could be some coil whine with these cards. If it got really bad, just do an RMA. It has since settled down a bit. I feel as if it was happening because it was actually cold (relatively) here in Florida for a while. Maybe the metal just expanding and contracting a bit. Now the temps are back to normal and I dont hear the whine anymore.
