Im gonna upgrade from a phenom ii X4 965 to intel and (still deciding on a motherboard depending on the cpu) but the main factor is the cpu so i was wondering i would notice a difference in performance between an i5 4670k and an i7 4770k? Im also planning on overclocking so could you also recommend a cooler to go with the cpu?

Thanks in advance.

specs;

Gigabyte 970A - ds3
Phenom ii X4 965
Radeon HD 7770
G-skill ripjaws 2113mhz - clocked at 1600

Oh and i forgot to mention that this rig is for gaming :)

the only difference between those 2 is the hyperthreading that the i7 has, the i5 is still unbelievably strong in many ways and will be enough. You most likely won't notice the difference between them 2 on a regular basis, unless you use many heavy work related apps like autocad and stuff, but even in those instances the i5 will be enough to get good work times and performance.

as for a cooler, if you don't want to overclock then stick with the stock (or maybe not, intel stock coolers are terrible), for modest to average overclocks a 30 dollar coolermaster hyper 212 evo is good

You will not gain any benefits from i7-4770k for gaming. i7's feature hyperthreading will have no effect on gaming. I suggest you grab the i5-4670k for gaming. For cooler, I recommend the Noctua NH-D14. It is cheaper than liquid coolers, quieter, and has high performance.

Stick with the i5 4670k. The i7 won't net you much improved performance in gaming at all. That 7770 will bottleneck your rig, especially if you are going to overclock. A 7870 (R9 - 270X) would be a strong starting point for a balanced system with the 4670K. You can find used or discounted 7870's for near $120 USD.

If you are going for air cooling, a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is pretty much the defacto champ for affordable and great performing coolers.

You might want to consider doing a video card upgrade as well the 7770 is pretty low end and no matter what CPU you get your results won't be great. That being said if it is strictly for gaming as the others have said... get the i5 4670k. Video card wise I think the GTX 760 is a very nice mid-high end card for the price they go for around $200-250.

The 212 hyper evo is a very nice cooler for the price... i think they are right around $35-40 right now.. The NH-14D would be the other one i'd recommend. The NH-14D will give you somewhere around 4-6c cooler temps but it costs about twice as much. The haswell chips tend to run hot so personally i went with the NH-14D so i could get a higher OC on my i7 4770k and keep decent temps.

ok, will go for the i5 4670k. As for the gpu ill probably go for a 270x since it seems to be more powerful than the 7870 and the hyper evo seems to be greatly recommended so thanks

You might want to consider the GTX 760, it is about $10 (5%) more than the 270x but performs 5-20% better.

http://techgage.com/article/amd-radeon-r9-270x-graphics-card-review/6/

look at each section to give you a better idea how they perform... The 270x is about the same in BF4 i think but the 760 pretty much wins in all the others, and in some by up to 20%.

actually if you can really find a 7870 at 120 bucks i would totally recommend that, even as a temporary solution because the 270x is 200 bucks and only marginally better than the 7870 (they are essentially the same chip, the 270x is just newer and has some tweaks to its clocks)

Edit: or what Derza said, GTX 760s can often be found for about 220 bucks and they are really powerful

IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ONLY GAMES NOTHING RUNNING IN BACKGROUND EXCEPT OS,THEN GO I5 4670K.HYPERTHREADING WILL BE USED IN FUTURE GAMES.BUT TO COPE WITH BACKROUND TASKS LIKE UPDATE AND ANTIVIRUS YOU MUST GO WITH I7 4770K.

to be clear, even so he had something running in the background he would still be able to play games(unless he is stresstesting in the background, example) then yes it would run slower.

Also future games will not support hyper-threading they would support use of more threads.
The computer cannot tell which threads is "hyper-threads" and which threads is "normal" threads.
Updates is by no means a heavy task for CPU's (not even close to be), I also cant see who will run a virusscan meanwhile playing games.

HE OBVIOUSLY WAS SAYING DONT LIE ABOUT BEING ABLE TO RUN GAME AND DOWNLOAD AND UPDATE AT ONCE WITH I5

:p

While Storm Pegausis is right that updates, downloads, and running a game can sometimes interfere with the "performance," it really has nothing to do with the CPU. Updating and downloading will really only take up your HDD bandwidth, so you may run into issues there.

There's really no need for the i7 unless you need the processing power to speed up encoding or rendering (and the like), or wanted to multitask CPU intensive apps (example: encode a video while playing and recording a game)

4690K/4670K will be a massive improvement, however you don't need to go any farther than that.

What case do you have? I'm hesitant to recommend a cooler that may not fit :)
