I am currently running an old Dell Inspiron 546 with an AMD Phenom II X4 945 non BE CPU. It has an AM2+ mobo with DDR2 800 ram.
It's on it's last legs and I need to upgrade.
I web surf, check email and light gaming like Bejeweled, Zuma, Peggle and Final Fantasy 11 on it.

My question is will I notice a difference going to a i5 3350p or a i5 3570k rather then just getting a new mobo for this AMD CPU?

Also I already have a power supply, drive etc so all I would need is the RAM, mobo and CPU.

Also for what I do will I notice a difference between the 3350p and the 3570k? I don't plan on using on board graphics and already have a fair graphic card (Radeon HD 5670 with 1g ddr5 ram)

I also want to reduce heat because even with a aftermarket cooler the AMD runs pretty toasty.

I do not plan to overclock either.

It's not the cooler. The motherboard is starting to flake out and needs to be replaced. I was just wondering if moving to Intel would be a better solution for performance and power saving.

Dont worry about power savings, you would hardly notice it.
Unless ofc you go with a fx 9xxx.

It all depend on your needs and budget.

Sorry I guess i wasn't clear enough.

I have to do a new build and currently have a Phenom ii X4 945 (Deneb)

Will I notice an improvement from the 945 going to a i5 3350p?

Will I notice any improvement going from an i53350p to a i5 3570k if I don't overclock?

Either way I have to get a new motherboard and ram. While I am at it if Intel would be that much better I would switch over.

You will get a huge improvement from 945 to 3350p.
Depending on budget a FX 8320 is very decent.
I would recommend getting a haswell processor instead, it's about 5-10% increase from ivy-bridge.
a 4670k is a good CPU.
Depending on your budget ofc.

AMD is by no doubt the best for the buck.

My main concern with Haswell is I have read I will need to buy a new power supply. I already have a good 750w Thermaltake and don't see the need to replace it if I don't have to.

How about something small and power conservative like this? With your video card, I'll be surprised if it breaks 150 watts load from the wall.

You dont need a new PSU.
Haswell just have a new feature, that some newer PSU support, which lets the system go in a "sleep-kinda mode" when the system isn't using any ressources. You can turn this feature off in BIOS.
