Is a core-i3 still a good cpu, mainly for gaming. I have a low budget, but if need be i'd upgrade to an i5. Cant use AMD cpus as no local retailers have them.

The higher end i3 isn't bad. It is still a dual core and if you get one near or above the 3.0GHz mark, it should "run" most games in playable frames.
Many developers are now including multi-core support going forward so the limitations on the i3 will begin show going forward.

it depends on how heavy your gaming is, if it's just light(ish) gaming like some MMORPGs or LoL or indie or older AAA titles, then an i3 is definitely enough.

and how high of quality do you want your gaming to be, if it's just medium/high settings on bioshock infinite, tomb raider, or something similar at a reasonable resolution, then an i3 paired up with a decent graphics card will be good enough, you won't be running BF4 multiplayer Ultra or anything, but you won't really have any troubles.

Yes, the i3 processors are still very good for gaming. Personally, if your going to upgrade to i5 soon, I would just buy a G3220 and save some more moeny. They have a surprising amount of power for a dual core.
