Ok, I'll assume from the 7790 choice, funds are not "unlimited" :) ...

Many folks go with AMD to get a faster CPU without breaking the bank....
AMD FX-4130, a 990 chipset motherboard, 8Gb RAM, and Window 7/8 and you'll be good to go

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131874 (ASUS 990, support DUAL GPU, in future)

NOTE: you could bump up the CPU a notch or two if funds permit, FX-8320 would be a nice bump up....

Are you looking for more FPS in games? If so I'd recommend a faster GPU (and power supply if needed)....
- GTX780/AMD 290X..
- GTX770/AMD 280X..
- GTX760/AMD 270X..

Would all make a very noticeable improvement in games FPS for you.

NOTE: if you have a 650watt supply from Corsair, XFX, Antec, or Seasonic your good to go to power any one of the cards above...

If you upgrade your CPU (for more compute type work) you'll need motherboard AND new copy of Windows 7/8 since unless your old copy is a Full-Retail version, it's keyed/registered to your old CPU/MB and MS license won't allow you to move it....

Given that, I'd go for the Haswell CPU as it is more current than Ivy-Bridge.... i5-4670 / and ASUS motherboard
