i5 4570 vs i5 4670

They are the exact same chip with nothing but a 200mhz clock speed difference separating them. This difference will only be noticeable when running benchmarks.

You should consider the Xeon e3-1230v3 instead as it it a far greater value. It is essentially an i7 without integrated graphics. It's clock speed is directly between the 4570 and 4670 but it has hyperthreading, more L3 cache, and more instruction sets. It will be more energy efficient than the i5s too.

The difference is that the 4670 is about $20 more expensive and offers a calculation speed increase that is indiscernible in most tasks to a casual observer. It is measurable in 10ths of a second in some music and video encoding.

The i5 is NOT better than the i7 in gaming. You heard people say the i5 is best because the i7 is usually not worth the extra $100 for gaming. Well, that Xeon is only $20-35 more than those two i5s.

and just to reiterate, that Xeon is an i7 4770 with disabled graphics and that has been slightly under clocked.

well there is that small subset of games that perform worse under hyperthreading than not... Or were those games myths? I don't remember

either way the Xeon idea is a sound one, it's basically an i7 (which is an i5 with hyperthreading, no joke that's all it is) but without an integrated GPU, so you'll have to use a discrete graphics card, which is no problem for most people.

So if I'm building a gaming computer anyway, I'm already going to get a sweet GPU (going to get the Asus gtx 780) so I shouldn't care about the integrated GPU. So why do gamers swear by those i5's vs the xeon??? My wife also wants to do video/photo editing, so it only seems smart to go with the xeon now.

Edit: Would this put any stress on my 780 if it's my only GPU?

Because the i5 4670k does outperform the Xeon when overckclocked. The Xeon is better for people who don't wish to overclock.
