Hello, A while back I built my father in law a budget gaming rig. I bought the Asrock 970 Pro3 motherboard, and an amd FX-4100 processor. Now that he has some extra cash built up again, he wants me to upgrade his processor. I was thinking the AMD fx-8350 would be a nice upgrade, It is the right socket type, but PCpartpicker.com told me that there might be compatibility issues and that the motherboards bios may require updating prior to using vishera processors.

Anyone know if I would have to update bios on the motherboard to run the fx-8350 on it? I know my way around computers pretty well, but I am no expert. I have never updated bios before, and am not sure I am entirely comfortable with it. Is it easy to do if I have to update bios for the processor?

Solution
You shouldn't have to, but it's super easy. As for the processor, I would spring for the FX-8320. It's less expensive and just clocked a little lower.

okay, thanks for the answer, I just watched a youtube video how to do it and it was extremely easy lol. Guess because I never did it, it just seemed like a hard task or something lol. Anyways, I will go ahead and order his new processor and just see what happens, hopefully it is just compatible, but if I have to update bios I now know that it is a task I am more than capable of doing. Thanks again :)

Yes, I use the FX-8350 with that very motherboard, HOWEVER BE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR BIOS TO THE LATEST VERSION!!!! If you do not have the latest version of the BIOS, then ANYTHING but the stock clock will cause for VERY strange lagging.
