Hi Guys,

A Couple of days a go i was given a HP ProLiant ML310 G4 Server, which in all was pretty cool. When i first booted it up i got a couple of errors for badly seated ram but after i fixed that I got an error saying that it doesn't have a Bios. On closer inspection i realized that it was telling the truth there is a spare holder(thingy) on the motherboard for a bios chip. The weird bit is that it posts and i can run mini xp from hirens boot cd, change configurations ect. So what do you all think, i looked on hp but cant find any reference to a dual bios.Do you think i should get a new chip and flash it or just not bother? Another question it has support for raid 0 and 1. I'm completely new to severs and raid so I'm gunna need some help. Can i have raid 1 for two drives and then another separate raid 1 for another 2 drives? That way i could have to the OS's Eyes 2 750GB Drives.

Thanks a bunch guys I'll probably have allot more questions along the way but this should get me started. :D

Well I'm not familiar with that model but if it's anything like the BL and DL version I use at work then I would hope it has a backup bios rom. If you go to HP's site you should be able to search for that version and find all the firmware related to that model. Since it's a G4 it's going to be pretty old so they may not support it anymore since G8's are the new ones they are shipping right now and my company is phasing out anything older than G6 right now.

This is an older server, but HP still maintains firmware for as far back as the first gen Proliants, if you know where to dig. Be sure to have your serial number handy.

On the older stuff it shouldn't be an issue, but HP started a stupid policy on the newer gear that unless you're under warranty or care-pack, you can't get firmware downloads from them for your device.

THe ML series has redundant system ROMs, and there's no need for a second chip. look for a firmware maintenance CD that is version 8.10 or less, that should have a valid firmware image for your ML310, and I think it was dropped entirely after 8.20 (I'm rusty, so caveat emptor.) The CD is bootable, and lets you run HP Smart Update Manager (HPSUM), so it's as simple as a few clicks to push the firmware.
