I recently built a new pc (4 days ago) and it has been inconstantly freezing, by this I mean the mouse and keyboard will not respond and the programs running will freeze however the disk drive still opens when prompted. It will sometimes freeze when downloading files and other times when in idle, i have been able to play my racing simulator with out any problem for hours. I have tried various things to rid the problem some have worked slightly sometimes allowing me to us the computer for up to 4 hours, while other times it will freeze while signing in. I have tried booting with only one stick of ram in every dimm however this has not solved the issue, i installed ubuntu and it ran fine for hours with out freezing. I have changed the ram timing to 9-9-9-24 from 11-11-11, this extended the time it would take to freeze. I have done multiple clean installs of windows 8.1 as well and installing all the drivers and windows update. I am currently running memtest and have done 3 1/2 passes with no errors. While running memtest I observed my cpu is at 60C is this normal?

My build
CPU: i5 4670
Mobo: Asus h87 pro
Gpu: Asus R7 260x 2gb
Ram: G.skill Ares kit (2x4gb) 1600
PSU: COrsair vs550
HDD: WD Blue 1tb
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster vortex

Any assistants would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
It's good that MEMTEST passes, but you should set your memory frequency and timings by using XMP. I also recommend updating the motherboard BIOS.

Your motherboard will also specify which slots should be used for 1, 2 or 4 sticks.

One of the solutions in troubleshooting is simply SWAPPING PARTS. Not always easy, but if you have a spare graphics card then try that so you can eliminate it as an issue. Same for keyboard, mouse etc.

CPU at 60deg??

That's too high likely unless it's really hot there. Try to verify this from WITHIN WINDOWS.

If I was forced to guess right now, I'd say either a CPU overheating issue, or a defective motherboard. The fact that Ubuntu seems to work is puzzling a little since I doubt it's a software thing...

Solution
Try a CPU stress test, like prime 95. 60 sounds pretty high for a memory test with an aftermarket cooler on it. I doubt this is it, with your freezings varying so much, but worth it to check.

Looking at your specs though, I'm suspecting the PSU may be the culprit. The VS series from Corsair isn't known for quality... Do you have another PSU you could borrow for a little bit? Also, is your BIOS up to date?

Thanks of the quick response, to change the ram timings i selected XMP in the bios and it change the timing automatically as 9-9-9 is the default from what i understand. I will try reflashing the bios. The board specifies that dual channel memory should be in every other slot to a2 and b2 however it freezes less in a1 and b1, should i change it back??

I could also remove the gpu and run of the built-in gpu. I cant change out the cpu right now however i could look at purchasing a new model one (what would you suggest) or having it replaced as it is still under warranty .

It's not the CPU. And changing the RAM so it freezes less is just like putting a band-aid on a gun shot wound - won't do much for you lol Can you download CPU-Z and monitor the temperatures of the CPU and GPU while doing anything that puts the CPU or GPU under load?

I'm still concerned it's the power supply though.

Okay so i ran live for speed a racing sim and BeamNG not simultaniously. I recorded that my temps on the mobo was 100 degrees C, the cpu was 66 c and gpu was 71c. These are all max temps in HWMonitor as i couldnt work out CPU-Z

Also I ran a bios update checker and this was the result http://biosagentplus.com/result/d985da1d948e855017055d13e6ed2f18#

53% of my drivers where outdated

Okay so i updated my bios and then downloaded all of the latest drivers from Asus, this appeared to have worked as it didn't freeze for 2 days however it has now frozen, and every time I turn it on it freezes while logging in.

Did you try that?

You could also try with swapping the cables for the hdd, both the power and data cable.Try them not simultaneously, otherwise if one of these acts up you don't know which.

About the error,
https://www.google.nl/#q=0xC000021a+
it's easier just to read for yourself and to try out things.

You might still end up with installing or repairing windows again looking at what is told in those threads.
Make sure you use the right drivers when you do,like for the right o.s.and also 64bit or 32bit.Search for the latest on the sites of the parts you have.

I have removed the gpu and subsequently removed the freezing issue as it has not frozen over 4 days, when the gpu is reinstalled the system freezes within 5 minutes of logging in. This has made me almost certain its a fault with the gpu, I am still unsure whether it is a its to do with a software issue such as drivers, I attempted to install the latest gpu drivers from the asus website however it froze while installing. Or whether its a component issue.

Thanks everyone for the advice
