Can somebody post some links up to benchmarks that show the benefits of overclocking in games -i.e. Games that are really improved by overclocking
,say from 22fps to 30,where it would make a difference worth the extra expenditure? As I would like to evaluate this .
I am talking about intel Haswell cpu's, not amd as their week single threading needs boosting anyway. I would like to see how many games it affects for the extra £80 in the u.k.
Thanks.

I have an i7 4930 which runs stock at 3.4GHz with a EVGA GTX 780 sc. I ran some tests to determine how my CPU overclock at 4.4GHz affected game performance. I ran a few games that had built-in benchmarks, including a few other benchmark apps like Heaven Benchmark which increased about 3-4fps at around 60fps. In a few real games I saw about a 3fps increase at around 90fps, so what about a 3-4% increase? I saw better performance by overclocking my video card.

Overclocking your cpu is great it can speed up your system there are some games out there that are cpu bound that benefit from the overclock but as the above poster said the gpu overclock can gain you more for your games... theres a program out that that's easy called msi afterburner it will work with about any systems gpu you can tweak from there don't go ape shit overclock your gpu all at once do it a little at a time and then run a benchmark like heaven and see what you have gained from it if your computer freezes locks up crashes or you see funny things on your screen they are artifacts and you have oc,d your gpu too much back it off a hair from that point its trail and error on any gpu/cpu no 2 are alike.

Just reading up on your chip btw.

Hmmm, Far cry 3, maxed out. Lets see if an overclock can help this 30 ish fps settup.

1920 x 1080, max details, max AA, max AF fps Index

AWW,just when we needed a boost, 0.6 fps. Who would have guessed?
The 4770k achieved a whole fps through overclocking, an achievement it seems.

Sleeping dogs? Never heard of it. Lets see what some clocking can do for it;

1920 x 1080, max details, max AA, max AF fps Index
Core i7-4770K Stock 54.2 100.00 %
Core i7-4770K 4.5G 54.0 99.63 %
Core i5-4670K Stock 54.3 100.18 %
Core i5-4670K 4.5G 54.3 100.18 %
More is better

Just when we needed to catch up to 60htz to match our monitor, the overclock did nothing to help, it seems. Shame. Whats next?

Skyrim.

920 x 1080, max details, max AA, max AF fps Index
Core i7-4770K Stock 114.2 100.00 %
Core i7-4770K 4.5G 115.4 101.05 %
Core i5-4670K Stock 108.4 94.92 %
Core i5-4670K 4.5G 114.8 100.53 %
More is better.

Aresult at last! Just when you dont need it, when the game is over a 100 fps, we see 5.5% bonus from a 4.5gig clock speed.
The search continues.

Metro last light. This is a deal breaker. It runs better on haswell than ivy/sandy.

1920 x 1080, max details, max AA, max AF fps Index
Core i7-4770K Stock 39.90 100.00 %
Core i7-4770K 4.5G 40.27 100.93 %
Core i5-4670K Stock 40.34 101.10 %
Core i5-4670K 4.5G 40.26 100.90 %
More is better
The speed bump of of 700 mhz over stock decreased fps by 0.1 .
And 40 fps are the sort of numbers that could do with a boost, too!

onwards..

Call of dogs.

1920 x 1080, max details, max AA, max AF fps Index
Core i7-4770K Stock 93.0 100.00 %
Core i7-4770K 4.5G 94.0 101.08 %
Core i5-4670K Stock 92.8 99.78 %
Core i5-4670K 4.5G 93.4 100.43 %
More is better
Tho the numbers are already excellent, a 700 Megahertz speed boost to the cpu resulted in a 0.6%
increase in frame rates.

I saved the best game (imo) for last
Bioshock!;

1920 x 1080, max details, max AA, max AF fps Index
Core i7-4770K Stock 166.00 100.00 %
Core i7-4770K 4.5G 166.43 100.26 %
Core i5-4670K Stock 165.79 99.87 %
Core i5-4670K 4.5G 166.37 100.22 %

Even when the cpu could handle it easily, the 700 mhtz boost in cpu frequency only resulted in a
0.7 frame per second increase.

I think we can reasonably assume from all this that if you want to build a pc primarily to play games,
spending an extra £80 (in the U.K.) which is roughly 33% more, on a clocking cpu, board and aftermarket cooler is an absolute waste of time and money.
If you like fiddling about and use your pc for other heavy tasks, it might be worthwhile.
Thanks for the link Vinay, I am still looking for benchmarks that might disprove this everybody!
Until then I shall continue to tell noobs not to waste the're money.

And this one prooves any i5 will do.
