hi im asking on behalf of my friend who has recently got his hands on an alienware m17x r2 and wants to upgrade the gpu from the hd 4870's that are already inside it.

iv found a hd 6970m brand new for £300 and i was wondering if it was really worth spending that much on a new gpu for this laptop, i tried looking for hd 5870m for crossfire but so far no luck.

If you haven't bought the Alienware laptop yet, you could try and send a e-mail to dell's support and ask them if the Alienware m17x r2 can come with a hd 6970m instead of the hd 4870m.

thats the thing, he rushed in and purchased it without a second thought, and now hes asked me to see what upgrades he could have, sadly dell dont have any video cards for this laptop any more.

Is he still able to send the laptop back? To return his money? If that would be possible, it would be better for him to search for an other laptop.

It may also be better for him to not buy an alienware PC/Laptop. Simply because you pay a lot more then for what you're actually getting.

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to laptops, so this is something i cant help you with.

What should he be buying instead?

And is the 6970m realy needed? You could buy one sure, but it also has to be built in the laptop. And that is in most cases realy hard. (I have tryed it myself with some old laptops just to learn how to do it).

But if he can't get his money back he should go to a nearby tech/pc store in his country. Ask the people there if its possible to upgrade his laptop GPU.

Otherwise he could search on the internet for some trustworthy stores who can help him with upgrading his laptop

I hope this was a little helpful

thanks for the reply, its to late to send it back now, but what i am going to do is take it to the laptop specialist at my work place, as he has alot of experiance with alienware laptops dating back to the original p4 series, i havnt yet seen the laptop yet so i carnt even give my verdict all i know is its a high end 17xr2
