Will Enermax Galaxy 850w power a Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti Windforce?

According to Jonnyguru.com, the Enermax Galaxy 850w PSU has 408w available to it for the PCI-E connections.

The GTX card needs about 250w according to the review of the base model here on the Tom's Hardware site - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-780-ti-review-benchmarks,3663-15.html

My question is, would this PSU be suitable for a Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti, or would I be better served by buying a better PSU please?

The reason I ask is that when I install the card, boot times are incredibly long (IF it boots at all and doesn't just present me with artifacting after displaying the BIOS splash screen for two minutes) and I can't get into the BIOS at all in any way using any method.

i dont know about enermax but dont get something thats cheap no matter how many watts it is and the price go with something known such as corsair, ocz, silverstone, seasonic, xfx, coolermaster, antec something thats 80+ certified and i dont mean cheap psu with 80+ certified so go with something heavy and good or else you're cheap power supply may pop or bad stability.

Thanks for that. very helpful. The Enermax Galaxy is rated in the Tier 1 category, which seems to indicate that it is very well respected indeed. Maybe it is the graphics card that is faulty.

No-one else I know has a PSU even approaching mine so I can't give them the graphics card to test in their system. Any ideas on how else can I isolate the problem without sending it back to the supplier please?

The problem with sending it back is that if they state the card works fine then they will charge me for courier both ways plus a testing fee, which isn't cheap. No other companies near me offer a testing service either.

My mobo has four PCIe slots, two at x16 and two at x8, i've tried two of them both with the same result, unfortunately.

My specs are

Do you still have the XFX HD5970 Black Edition if so is that still working ok?

It would be amazing if the Gigabyte is faulty, not impossible but their top end models are usually very reliable.

From your spec above you appear to have no other PCIe slots in use by other cards, if you didnt mention them, then try without them installed.
You can actually try the graphics card in a PCIe 1x slot. Windows will moan if it boots but you will get a display, it effectively runs in 2D.
But I suspect as you've tried the other slots its not going to make any difference.

Only other things I can suggest is upgrading Motherboard BIOS or setting all the settings to 'Fail safe defaults'. If you do that make a note of your existing settings because if for example it sets your hard disks from AHCI to IDE Windows will no longer boot until you set it back again.

If possible try another PC. You dont need to plug in the 6/8 pin power on the graphics card to see if it will work, it will just run in an underpowered mode.

Other than that I think sadly its looking like a graphics card fault...

Thanks AGTDenton, a useful reply and I appreciate it. I've just tried all the slots on my motherboard now and it's not happening.

I've ordered another PSU as my one is old anyway and it will arrive tomorrow. I shall try the card with that and see if it helps. Other than that, I will return the card to my supplier on Wednesday and see about a replacement.
