I'm looking to upgrade from my 2GB 6950 currently installed in my system. It will be used heavily for gaming with simultaneous streaming/recording. I'd like to be able to at least do this on High settings in most games for the next year - 18 months. I'd prefer something for under $300 however there is a particular PNY 770 that is $315 on Amazon at the moment that also has my eye if the jump from what's available to me under $300 to that is worth it. The extra $15 for that is honestly a stretch and as far as I could go, so that's the only 770 I could get that I've been able to find. My understanding is my best performance/dollar staying under $300 is going to be a 760.

Is the the jump worth the extra $40-$60 for that particular 770, or would I be better off saving the money and getting a 760. Basically, is the recording at the same time gonna hit the 760 hard enough that things would be noticeably bad, or would it still be capable of delivering 30fps+ in those conditions? Or would one of the third party 760s with overclock be comparable? Is there a better option than the 760 for less than $300 that I've overlooked?

the 6xx and 7xx series come with shadowpay. It's freeware from Nvidia to record footage wihtout stressing the cpu/gpu by recording with the seperate H.264 decoder which is located on the gpu. That being said I'd still recommend the 770, or else you won't be able to play games on high for another year (im assuming you're talking about new games)

As a gamer, I'd always go for the more powerful card if the budget allows because it wouldn't hold the price premium if it wasn't worth it. About recording, recording depends on 3 things, your CPU, GPU and your storage device. If you're recording to an SSD for example a Samsung EVO, you'll have very little lag or frame drop. If your recording to a 7200rpm drive, you will run into frame drops and dips. 1080p or even 720p files are huge and every second of video is a lot of data.
