I have a fairly decent computer that maybe 2-3 years ago was top of the line with a eVGA GeForce GTX 580. I was going to buy an all new gaming computer a few weeks ago, but my wife talked me out of it. So I decided that instead I would upgrade the videocard to a GTX 780 ti CLASSIFIED. After ordering, I can tell you it fits onto my motherboard just fine, used 2x 6+2-pin power cables to fill the 2x 8-pin power connectors, and Windows 7 boots just fine, but shortly after logging in, the colors on my monitor go haywire, flickering wildly and with artifacts appearing everywhere, and eventually my computer freezes completely forcing me to hold the power button to reboot. Safe mode works just fine, and if the system is clean of nVidia drivers it works fine, it's only when I install the drivers things go haywire.

Right now the only theory I have is that it has something to do with my PSU, but I'm wondering what your opinions on this might be. Maybe my motherboard is incompatible and I failed to realize it or is it something else? Specs below:

Processor: Intel Core i7 990x
RAM: 24GB Ripjaws DDR3-1600
Mobo: Rampage III Black Edition
HDs: 2x 2TB HDDs
Videocard: Currently eVGA GeForce GTX 580. Problem is with eVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti CLASSIFIED
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 64-bit
PSU: Forgot to check the model/make while the computer was open, but I can tell you it's a 1200W PSU rated SLI-ready. It's also 2 years old. :/

With the 780 you have to update your bios from '.something' to '.cab'. I can't remember for some stupid reason what it normally is, and I'm too lazy at the moment to look for it. But I know immediately after posting this I'll think of it, at which point the edit will occur. Look to your mobo manufacturer for a bios flash download or update. Be careful with manually changing it.

I don't think it's overheating as it happens within a minute of the computer booting let alone playing a game. The fans are also spinning, so again I don't think so.

Your post confuses me. :/

The BIOS is as current as it's going to get (last updated in 2011). I'll wait for your edit though.

Bios files are normally .ROM <-- that was it, couldn't remember it. With the gtx 780, your bios has to have the .CAB files for it to work properly. If not, it can do some weird things, mostly related to consistent crashes and BSOD, and probably overheating. It's something that's fairly new, but the 780 requires it to run properly. It says it in its documentation and installation guide I'm pretty sure.

I did some research and while I can't find anything in my documentation, I did see some other threads confirming what you've said. However, I can't seem to find any guides on how to do this. The best I could do was find a .ROM to .CAP conversion utility, but a) it's to .CAP instead of .CAB and b) it's motherboard specific and my motherboard isn't on it. Any ideas?

UPDATE: Got my hands on another 780 ti classified and it does the same thing. I also tried a different PSU, 1350W instead of 1200, but not only did the problem persist, but as far as I can tell I fried the PSU. D:>

I'll RMA that, so it's not a big deal. However it doesn't explain why the videocard is not working. Google searching shows other people with x58 processors and mobos who've had no problems with the 780 ti other than bottlenecking. :/

UPDATE #2: Found a work around, although I really can't call it that; I'll explain in a bit.

I discovered that if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to the task screen as I'm logging on, the computer will still glitch and go all crazy, but the video card driver will actually reset itself, display a message about the driver crashing, and then will work fine until I reboot it. So... I'm guessing it's a driver conflict of some sort?

Running on the card right now, and while the situation isn't ideal, it seems to be working at the moment. Weird. :/
