Hello! I recently ran into problems with a Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB and hope you can clear some facts to me. Specifically, the disk functioned normally a year or so. I use it as a secondary disk in my build for installed software, music and videos. A few days ago my system was slow and freezed when reading data from this disk. I made a crystaldisk test and saw a high real value (200ish) in "c5 current pending sector count". I immediately made a back up and tried "Data lifeguard diagnostic" from the wd site. All tests gave me errors. HdTune saw the same C5 value as Crystaldisk and a benchmark here gave me read speeds between 0.2 to 6mb/s which is pretty slow. Eventually my win7 would freeze and/or won't start with the hdd connected.
Next step were some tests under Dos from a bootable flash drive. With the exception of HDSentinel which said the Hdd is 52% healthy not one utility even read the smart, not to mention formatting it. I was able to wipe the disk under Linux based GParted and create 2 ntfs partitions in it. Now win7 works with it, I get close to normal speed results but the "C5 current pending sector count" keeps changing after each operation on the disk. From hour to hour I get values like this 89, 50, 31, 80, 1, 5, 19 etc. I tried again Data Lifeguard Diagnostic from WD with varied results: sometimes it passes the quick test, sometimes not. It never finishes the extended test. I wiped the disk in this app minutes ago and gsmartcontrol shows me a C5 of 50. I should also mention the reallocation sector count was and is at 0 in all testing apps throughout this ordeal.
I reckon the hdd is a goner, but I would like to know what's happening exactly? And to be sure I won't see it back from warranty as is with some bulls**t excuse, what can I do to further its death?
