I currently have a Nvidia gtx 670 with a 850 watt psu. I want to upgrade my graphics card should I buy a amd r9 280x or a NVidia gtx 780 or wait for the 800 series ?

Although the 290x is a tad faster, it usem app. 150W more energy, therefore being MUCH hotter. I'd get the 780 that uses about 250W so you'll be able to OC it allot.

But rethinking your question once more, I wouldn't get anything. The 670 is a bit slower r9 280x. So, I'd wait for the 800 series or the 300 series from AMD. No need to upgrade. Crysis 3 plays maxed out on a 670, so no need to replace it. IF you want the VERY BEST performace, get another 670.

I'd get the Sapphire's R9 290 Tri-X OC for US$550 and be happy.
It's quiet, cool and fast. It outclasses the GTX 780 big time. On the rare exceptions where it lose, it's more like a tie.

If you have the money get the r9 290x. I bought the r9 290 for 30% cheaper and only 6% less powerful and I can max out bf4 on a 64 player match at ~70 fps. I am using it with an i7 4770K oc'ed to 4.0 Ghz. Although the AMD cards are slightly less convenient, they pack more of a punch than NVIDEA. I'm not being a fanboy here though. The Nvidia cards are quieter and cooler. It just depends on what you can handle. You need lots of cooling for the r9 290x. The gtx 780 can handle itself with only a few fans. Your choice.

Ok, I use the r9 290 with an i7 4770K oc'ed to 4.0 Ghz and I get ~70 fps on bf4 maxed out with 64 players solid. This is just what I have and I am very proud that I built this epic rig. Any questions? Ask away

High end cards in the next generation won't be out for a long time. There isn't even word for when the low end 800 series will come out. I don't get how anyone can say just wait until it comes out because they don't know any time table. the 290x is a performs noticeably better than a 290x but has known overclock issues. As long as a high factory overclocked 290x is not much more ($100) than a 780 I would go with that, such as the tri x. Otherwise the 780 is better price for performance.
