Suddenly my secondary hard drive SEAGATE ST3160815AS has stopped working. With it connected, my PC fails to boot Windows and beeps every few seconds. If disconnected, the computer boots without problems. I imagine the hard disk hardware will be damaged. Is there any way to diagnose the exact problem and recover my data?

You can try putting the HDD in an external USB box and see what happens.

One of my Maxtor drives "died" a few years ago - would no longer show up on my PC - but when I powered it up in an external box, it worked fine. Seems like it just stopped liking my PC's SATA ports for some reason.

I've bought a SATA to USB adapter and it doesn't work neither. It seems a severe hardware error.

Thanks for the answer.
