Hey Guys,

I currently own a ~3 1/2 year old ASUS K52F Laptop, which has been doing me a great job! I started college this past fall, and because of that, I had built a pretty decent Desktop PC for me, something that can handle extensive gaming and CAD capabilities. I am a Mechanical Engineering & Computer Science major in college, so I figure my desktop which is in my dorm can handle majority of those requirements.

Though, I do currently use my ASUS K52F laptop majorly for writing essays, browsing the web, watching movies/YouTube, and even coding. It currently is loaded with Windows 7, though, I am wondering if I should switch the OS on it. It has been getting slow lately (looks like it is a time for an OS wipe), but was wondering if I should consider loading Linux on this machine as a daily driver. I want to avoid dual booting, as I only have 320GB of hard drive space. I am knowledgeable in various Linux flavors, so that should not be a problem, but I was wondering which distro of Linux should I consider? I know Ubuntu has changed a lot, so I wonder, being my laptop is now a bit older, would it be fast enough on my machine? Or should I run Xubuntu? Would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Here are the specs to my laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220964

Thanks!

There's nothing wrong in dual-booting, especially for a laptop which will not be used for mass-storage (and even then, you can play movies / MPs stored on Windows partition from Windows).

As for which flavor of Linux - it's a personal taste. Three years a not too much for a laptop, so any current distro should work. I am running Kubunto 13.10 on three-year old Dell Latitude).
