Running Dual GPU's

Solution
you cannot, you can only run cards of the same architecture, so #1 criteria is that they have to be from the same company, #2 they have to be from the same generation, #3 for Nvidia cards they have to be the exact same card and for AMD cards they have use the same GPU architecture

Wrong actually, you should be able to run both cards in at the same time aslong as you don't try to crossfire them: you should be able to use the firepro to compute and 4870 for 3D. You can run an nvidia card and ati card simultaneously if computing for example.

However there seems very little point in keeping the 4870 if you only use CAD/Photoshop?

You may have to install the drivers for each card separately when they are both in simultaneously, or at least reinstall the drivers when they are both plugged in. And make sure that crossfire is not enabled.

oh sorry I meant that they can't be used in tandem, misinterpreted the simultaneous part.

you can run both on your computer but not at once, and it also requires partitioning your hard drive I believe, to install each of the drivers on a separate partition

I will not be running the cards in SLi or CrossFire. If there was a simple solution then I think I would keep the 4870, but since I do zero gaming I think the effort in partitioning the hard drive and re installing the drivers is above the benefits that I will gain from running both cards.

Thank you again for the invaluable information.
