2 days ago windows gave me a message that me legitimately bought windows 7 home premium operating system is not genuine and i have to enter the product key which i don't have because windows 7 came pre-installed in my system and i can't find any product key but i hav bought windows 8 a couple of months ago and i am ready to upgrade. and i am a software noob so please help me out in this question: if upgrading my windows 7 to windows 8 will it format my hard drive or will i lose all my games and stuff?

Solution
You can generally 'upgrade', and it will probably keep all your 'stuff'. Key word 'probably'.

However -
1. It might not upgrade from a Win7 install that it sees as not genuine.
2. With any major change, it is ALWAYS advisable to have your critical data saved elsewhere and offline first. Better to have it and not need it, rather than not have it and click the wrong checkbox during the install.

Why is your Win7 install reporting as being not genuine? You can call MS and verify.
