New OC settings, now PC is unstable at all settings including default [AMD]

Background:

Last November I finally got my rig running again after I got around to RMA'ing my piece of crap Agility 3. The new Vertex 4 they sent me seems to work great.

However, for about the past month during the UEFI screen it would show the usual "American Megatrends Copyright 2010" blah blah, and then seconds later under that it would say "system has failed to boot several times before". After a 10 second timeout, Windows would start normally. When this occurs the PC does not detect the CPU running at the OC levels I set for it, but instead the CPU runs at 3615mhz and the RAM runs at anywhere between 800-1000 (its specced at 1333). I've had this issue for at least a month but it has not caused failures while the system was functioning so I did not resolve it.

Problem:

Not sure where to start. This morning I tried some new OC settings on my FX4100, part of my test to see if I can get it stable before buying an aftermarket cooler. I finally managed to get the OC settings to stick, with the cores running at something around 4300mhz (don't remember exactly). CPU-Z showed everything checking out OK, so I ran Windows experience index and this caused my GPU to crash (typical gray screen). This wasn't very disconcerting considering it's done that maybe 15 times since I've installed as I've been trying to find a good setting for it.

However, after powering down and restarting, instead of going into Windows it flashed a blue screen with text and then the video signal cut out (no signal detected).

Went back into BIOS and reset all to mobo defaults. Keep in mind GPU is still at AMD Overdrive levels, umm 1075/1375 I believe.

All attempts to start system now crash two seconds after logging into Windows. There is not a wide enough time frame for me to reset AMD Overdrive to default before this happens, but because the crash causes complete loss of video signal and not a typical gray screen, I'm worried there might be something more sinister going on.

I'm looking at getting a new power supply so I can upgrade some more hardware, but I'd like to be able to understand what's going on in this situation first.

I appreciate any help or recommendations, thanks!

Try booting to safe mode to disable your software OC solution, it shouldn't kick in in safe mode. Overclocking can shorten life spans of devices, and what used to overclock may not be able to any more. That could be the case, or quite a few other issues. Let us know if safe mode worked for you.

Well the GPU I had just purchased a week ago, and in safe mode the CPU is overclocking perfectly as it has for the past few years.

However, in safe mode the CCC does not run, giving me the message that "there are no settings which can be modified by AMD CCC".

Edit: Managed to start up normally and get into AMD Overdrive before it crashed and set the GPU to defaults. Looks stable now.

My question is, though, is the problem here something to do with OC'ing both the GPU and CPU? Or is the CPU simply losing its ability to be OC'ed? (I've had it for almost four years and it has almost never run at its stock frequency).

Wow I'm really surprised the OC software kicks in when in Safe Mode, sort of undoes the purpose of it. However I'm glad you were able to get it going and use your PC again. You'll need an overclocker expert to handle that question, my last serious effort overclocking was back with a 486DX2 66 Mhz :)

I believe it was a combination of AMD Overdrive CPU settings and the BIOS overclock settings. Silly me, I ran the CPU test with the AMD software but didn't realize that running the test turned on the CPU software overclock automatically. Having both at the same time probably caused the issues.

Currently my FX-4100 can't go above 3615mhz, no matter what I set in the BIOS...I'm still getting the "system failed to boot several times before" message before Windows starts. I have also had the system randomly restart a few times, however setting the GPU to default settings stops that from occurring.

Is 3.5 years too long to OC a CPU? Is there any hope for this FX-4100? :\
