Well, I'm building a gaming rig , and i know intel is said to be much better, i can run the games i like to play perfectly fine on my laptop. My laptop is running an AMD A8-4500M APU with Radeon HD Graphics at a clock speed of 1.9 GHz.
I am looking to go with either an AMD FX-4350, an AMD FX-4170, or an AMD FX-8350. I personally want the 8350 because it has 8 cores and is all beast..... I have done some research and figured out that apparently for AMD processors its really not 8 cores, its either 16 or 4. I am not sure if thats true though. Probably not, but if it is 4 than plz tell me and thats the one i will go with. I plan on upgrading my setup yearly, part by part (motherboard and cpu at same time.) I will be starting off with a better monitor. (i have a spare.) If you would like to compare the three heres a link: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/cpu/#xcx=0&m=6&R=5,4,0&sort=a5&z=4200,4000&c=8,6,4

That is not true, 8350's use higher quality silicon compared to the 8320 so will overclock higher.

Avoid the x1xx and the x2xx series, they perform poorly compared to their piledriver (x3xx) counterparts.

As for AMD "cores" I believe they have 2 cores to 1 module, so they're not cores in the traditional sense. The FX 4350 would have 2 modules comprised of 4 cores total and the 8350 4 modules comprised of 8 cores total.

Most games aren't using more than 4 cores, so the 4350 should be enough for most games. For games that use less than 4 cores the 2 would perform almost identically if they're at the same clock speed. There are some exceptions to the rule: BF4, Crysis 3, Watch Dogs and maybe some newer games that are coming out.

Which graphics card do you have? That will most likely determine your gaming experience.

R9 270x Im playing minecraft and terraria on this thing, remember that. I personally will be doing a bit of rendering on this so with that, more cores the better. Also, i will be hosting a 10 slot 4gb ram 24/7 FTB Ultimate server, so that matters too.....

check hwbot, average OC's are similar. They're just binned lower. Take it from someone who's owned 2 of each.
