I'm stuck on what to make of this, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who may experience with this problem.
As of the last month or two, my PC will randomly and suddenly shut off with no warning, like the plug was pulled. I've checked all the usual culprits...overheating, bad power supply, etc..and it is not overheating and I eventually replaced the power supply thinking that was it. Nothing shows up in the log files hinting there's a problem. After it dies, I have to turn off the power switch or unplug the machine momentarily, then switch it back on before it will restart. Otherwise, it turns on for a second and goes right back off. Even with the new power supply it still happens a couple of times a week.
As of the last few weeks now, I've also noticed that my USB keyboard (MS Intellitype) will cut out and be off for 5 or 10 seconds, then come back on. Switching it to other USB ports doesn't make a difference, and it will happen when nothing is moving with the keyboard, just sitting still. It doesn't appear to be a worn chord or anything detectable with the keyboard, though that might be it. I don't know with any certainty that the USB problem is related to the PC dying suddenly, it's just that they're coincidental problems now and I've never had any issues like these with any other machines over the years. (Note: back when the machine first started dying, I also had an case when on of the internal SATA drives did not come back after waking it up overnight..just clicked away. But that hasn't recurred, so don't know about that one.)
My main concern is the PC shutting down for no apparent reason. I've read something that sounded very similar happening to someone who ended up having their CPU replaced (even with no overheating apparent) and that seemed to fix the problem. But before I spend any money on guesses, I'd sure appreciate any thoughts from anyone with experience solving this kind of problem.
Thanks,
JT
