How to hack the ASUS RT-N14U router to accept the 4g USB donge IMW-C600W by Infomark (not in the list of supported adapters)?

Hello,

I have a ASUS RT-N14U router which has a usb slot and accepts 3g/4g donges. I want to connect the 4g donge (IMW-C600W manufactured by Infomark, don't ask how I got it ;] ) to my router via usb. However, the donge is not in the list of usb adapters that the router supports. As a result, I can't set them up to work together.

Still, there must be a way to make them work together - editing/changing router firmware, etc. I would be happy to find a smart person who could advice me on how to hack that situation.

This seems like a hardware support issue, not a security issue. The firmware does not contain the drivers necessary to operate the unsupported modem.

Dear Ahnilated, there's nothing illegal to make your router work with a 4g usb donge which is currently not supported. I'm sorry, if you think otherwise ;)

P.S. Word "hack" can also be used to describe finding unorthodox solutions to your technical challenges. It's not something bad by default.

Unfortunate choice of words. "Hack" has been subsumed into 'illegal'. Not necessarily the case, and down not appear to be the case here.

But if the native router firmware does not support that device, then another firmware might.
dd-wrt, or Tomato, or similar.

Hm. The donge simply gives a signal (which should have a uniform standard), and the router receives it. The router must simply recognize the device it gets the signal from and understand what to do with it. Judging from all the above it really sounds like noncompatability is in the software level. Is it?

Thanks for the headstart! I have checked both dd-wrt and Tomato, but none of them support Asus RT-N14U (while dd-wrt supports nearly anything Asus but this model). Are there any other solid firmwares to check?

The dongle is an integrated circuit which contains a modem and accompanying microprocessor. It's controlled through a USB device driver which in the case of a router must ship with the firmware.

OpenWRT, but it isn't supported there, either.

It very much depends on the capabilities of the router. RAM and installed CPU. Neither of which you can 'change'.

You have a couple of big problems. First that router uses a different chipset...mediatek than most so it will take them a while if ever to build third party firmware for it.

Next the device you want to use is not actually a dongle it is a hotspot. It can be hacked it appears to make it run like a dongle but it is highly unlikely you will get any support for that type of configuration even if you were to go buy a router you could load third party firmware. Your only hope would be to buy a dd-wrt router and then attempt to link in a version of the linux driver for your fake dongle yourself. This is not trivial, most times I try to link my own version of dd-wrt I end up with a router that does nothing and I have to work hard to restore it to something that will even boot.

Thanks for insights. Yes, its a hotspot, not a donge actually... And yes, it looks I'm f**ked :(
The cheapest option left is to get a real donge that my current firmware supports.
