I'm planning on buying an external optical drive for my new build but I don't know if it would run the same as an internal drive or not. I will only really need it to install the os, play a few old games and maybe to watch films.

P.s. would the external drive for an iMac work on a pc?

The internal optical drive will be faster than an external USB 2 or 3 because it is directly plugged into the SATA port (either 2 or 3). No need to plug-in and unplug; one less connection to worry about. Besides, an internal drive costs around $20 and is well hidden inside the computer case. It will also dress up the front of the computer.

The advantage of an external optical drive is that you can take it from computer to computer conveniently. Slightly more expensive than an internal drive.
