So I have purchased a new gpu for my HP pavilion, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03397907
but after installing it my computer would not boot. After a lot of troubleshooting I have found that my computer only boots when the monitor is plugged in. The GPU is a gigabyte gtx 660 OC.
I have replaced the PSU in my computer for a corsair 600W one, and have correctly seated the gpu and plugged in the neccresary power connectors. The computer works fine with my old gpu, or no gpu, and I have already replaced the gpu so it is not faulty.

So here is exactly what happens. If I turn on my computer with the monitor plugged into the 660, the computer will freeze at the HP startup screen where it says "press esc for startup menu". Pressing esc or any key does nothing. Eventually it will switch over to a black screen with a flashing underscore in the top left. It stays there and doesn't change.

If I turn on the computer with the monitor unplugged it does something different. When I turn it on the power button on the pc flashes orange and beeps 6 times, and the computer then begins to start up. After about 2-3 minutes I hear the fans slow down so I know the computer has started, I plug in the monitor and everything runs perfect. If I plug in the monitor half way through it is just a blank screen.

Really need some help, I have no idea what to do.
Thanks.

Checking the HP forums regarding the 6 Beep BIOS code; try this

Please make sure your card is properly seated in the motherboard slot and that any auxilary power connections are mated to the power supply. Turn on the computer and immediately tap the "ESC" key and press "F10" when given that option. Once in the BIOS, change "Secure Boot" to disabled and "Legacy Support" to "Enabled". Now, save the changes and reboot the computer. This should allow the computer to recognize and use your new video card.

These HP systems are not really designed to be upgraded, that's why I recommend a customer build for gaming, an HP for a workstation or office environment. They have good customer support and warranty, but no room for improvement on the system.

Alright I will try that and thanks. I am aware that these machines are not designed for upgrading, I wish I had known more about computers when I purchased it :p.
And yes all power cables and connections are plugged in.

I could not find anything about legacy support or secure boot. I did find an option for PCI Express x16 slot security, should that be on or off?

Turns out the slot security actually just enables/ disables the slots, so I will need to have it enabled. Any other ideas? Only things I can find related to PCI is "pce serr# generation" which is enabled and "pci vga palette snooping" which is disabled.

Not related. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000188.htm

It sounds like the PC is restricting the card though.

Next option would be to see if you borrow any other PCI video card and see if it works. Rules out the video card and focus on the motherboard.

I would also google for the manual for the tower and see if there's a replace videocard section.

The 7450 that came with the pc works fine. There doesn't seem to be much in the manuals, only thing about upgrading/replaces was a manual with pictures on how to install each part.

Is there more than one output on the back of the card?

Did you try the other DVI slot?

Are you using a TV as a monitor?

There are 4 outputs on the back of the card. I am using the HP 2011x monitor, and I only have one way of connecting the monitor to the pc. I am currently using vga with an adapter to plug into the card.

Try the other ones.

I've had a few cards that won't show the bios post on a TV, but would boot the OS.

So after some trouble shooting I ended up getting a new motherboard, however when I started the pc with the gpu plugged in there was no signal. It boots fine with out the gpu, or with a different one. I have now found that the pc only boots if there is just one stick of ram installed. what is causing this and how can I fix it? Motherboard is Asrock H71M-DGS
