MSI Z87-G45 Dual Channel Memory Confusion

This may be a silly question, but I've been all over Google and cannot find a solid answer. I have an MSI Z87-G45 gaming mobo and two identical 8 GB sticks of RAM. The manual shows using either DIMM 2,4 or DIMM 1,2,3,4 for dual channel. However, I've always been under the assumption that you start with DIMM 1,3 for dual channel, because it is closest to the CPU, and then use 2,4 for your second set. Where should I place the RAM. Will it make a difference if I use 1,3 or 2,4?

This is only the second PC I've built, so I'm not that experienced, but I'm guessing I should just follow the picture in the manual. I thought I'd post here just to make sure. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Solution
I've got a similar board*.Use dimm 2+4, second slot from the left, and the far right slot. You could use dimm 1+3 and there would be no difference but sometimes just doing what the book says is for the best. Most manuals actually say to use dim 2+4 first rather than 1+3 but again, there is no difference.

*I have the MSI Z87-GD65

Good to hear someone agreeing with my first though. I'll put the RAM in 2 & 4 then. Thanks so much!

If you are getting that error I suggest you take a very close look at the pins in the socket. 1 to 4 pins may be bent and cause that error. I've seen it all too often when people come in for repairs at my work. You should make another thread for this though.

PM me if you do. I'll help you if I can.

it actually says on the mobo (Z87-G45) Dimm 2 Dimm 4 First (on the left side near the bottom of the socket. So yeah, most def 2 and 4 then

Make a new thread, you would get more help. if 1+2 boots rather than 1+3 or 2+4, you are looking for an issue in the way the system is handling single channel RAM vs dual channel RAM. Typically we find this issue with the processor or socket pins.

I have this board, I was wondering is it possible to get triple channel? I have using a i4790k and it will do triple channel, but I can't seem to get it with x3 4gb corsair ballistix memory sticks.

you should have asked this in a new thread but the answer to your question is no this board is not capable of doing any more than dual channel.
