I'm having issues with my build and am wondering if it is tied to my RAM, which is not on my mobo company's approved list. Online, people say that the computer "won't start" among other things. I'm wondering more specifically what this means. My computer will turn on (lights, fans, etc.) but nothing will display on the monitor. If RAM is incompatible, wouldn't some loading screens appear even if it doesn't completely post? Is a black screen ("no signal" message on my TV) but the rest of the system turning on an indicator of RAM issues?

Sounds like a video issue - are you using a graphics card? if so, may want to plug into the mobos vidoe output then see if you can get into the BIOS and change the primary graphics to PCI-E or PEG
