Is PCIe 2.0 x16 Enough for GTX 780?

My father's thinking about upgrading the graphics in his workstation, but isn't ready for a full system rebuild until later. As it stands, his system only supports PCIe 2.0, but of course at full x16.

As I understand, the 3.0 and 2.0 revisions of PCIe have the same physical specs, except that the lanes are clocked at different speeds. And as I understand, PCIe 2.0 is half the speed per lane of 3.0, so 16 lanes of 2.0 is equivalent to 8 lanes of 3.0 in terms of bandwidth.

Nvidia says that 8 lanes of 3.0 is okay for one of their GPUs, at least in SLI. Given that 16 lanes of 2.0 has equivalent bandwidth, would a single 780 work well with PCIe 2.0 x16, if at all?

I used a gtx 780 with pci express 3.0 8x and 16x and I found that sometimes the performance was the same or the 16x was a few frames faster.

You will be fine, I'm using pci express 3.0 8x for my gtx 780 ti and it's running well however according to hwinfo indicates i'm using 6x on average and at times 8x.
