If you want to join our general discussion you can have a look, the first pages it has all the info you need.

Essentially it uses spare resources on your computers to run simulations on how proteins (building blocks of your body) fold. Stanford University is trying to understand why proteins fold to get a better understanding of why they misfold. This is looking into several diseases including Alzheimers and cancer. Most of the team run their rigs 24/7 for F@H.

Added: How - download the client from http://folding.stanford.edu/

Why - Each of us have our own reasons. Essential we are folding to help cure these diseases.

This could be me reading your reply as being less than helpful but what is folding@home. I understand it uses idle resources but how and why would you do it. I have used google once or twice before.

Folding@home is a program you can download that will use your pc to help in research. These facilities cannot afford an Ibm supercomputer so they get volunteers to use their idle pc power to analyze data like proteins for cancer and how it reacts to certain things. kinda like seti@home which uses your pc to analyze radio data from space to search for aliens. thousands of pcs can do the job faster than the few pcs they have.
