Will a X16 to X1 adapter work with my 650Ti??

Hi

So, my elder brother accidentally broke the only PCI-E X16 slot that I have (The blue casing has completely come off, revealing the bare pins) And this has rendered my graphics card useless.

I then began doing some research and came across an adapter that will allow me to connect my X16 card (GTX 650Ti) to my X1 port and it supposedly comes with a molex power connector as well. So what I'm asking is will this work with my card and would there be any severe drawbacks from doing this.

Thanks.

Yeah... If your Motherboard has received that kind of physical trauma, I would just save to buy another board...

I don't know what he could have done to completely break a PCI-E connector...but yeah...

+1 to the two posters above me

So I basically have to buy a new board, which is exactly what I didn't want to do because putting in a new board is apparently quite hard and I'm not as tech-sawvy as I'd like to be. What should I cover the pins with?

Electrical tape. It's usually somewhere in the house (thus free) or available for at the dollar store (guess how much it costs? ;) sorry just a bit of humor to try and soften the bad news)

There are many tutorials and walkthroughs (Here on Tom's, on Youtube and other forums) dealing with motherboard replacement/ upgrading. Look through some and if/when you have questions post them in the Motherboard forum here at Tom's Hardware and more helpful people (like ourselves :) ) can help you out with that too.

Stiff upper lip and make your brother pay for your new motherboard. Tell him WE said so.

It will be better if you buy a new MB, for now you can cover the pins with some electrical tape. Just keep in mind that with a new MB you have to reinstall OS, and you may have to re-activate your OS, cause the license is somewhat married to the MB. And you may have to update the BIOS of the new MB to work with your old CPU, sometimes CPU/MB doesn't match so there is no guarantee of them to work together. Good luck.

+1 to Lonewolf about the OS being licensed to you via your MAC address which is generated/located on your motherboard. If you are running Windows you can contact Micro$oft cu$tomer $ervice and explain the situation and have your license re-assigned to your new MAC address (these types of things do happen so it's not unheard of to them).

I really don't understand what Lonewolf means about updating the BIOS to be able to match a CPU to the motherboard. When you are picking out a new mobo, look at the manufacturer page to see the list of supported CPUs, if your CPU is on that list there will be no issue. I've never in all my time playing with computers (since 1986) heard of a bios update being required to use a CPU. Either the motherboard supports the socket and the features or it doesn't. However I have many times heard of a bios update being required to run devices (such as through the AGP/PCI/PCIE slots, the IDE/SATA ports or the USB).

You'll be fine, you can do this and as I said, if you have any questions about anything to do with the new motherboard the people on the forums will be here to help with that too.

@ Dom_79, just a hint, sockets match doesn't always work, it happens with old CPU's and with new MB's since we don't know how old is the CPU of OP's.

Sometimes FSB doesn't match, so no matter if the sockets or other things match, there is no guarantee to work. And there are several other factors too. I am talking through my experiences, but I didn't say it will must not work, what I said as a precaution that it may or may not work.

If you could PM me some examples of sockets matching and the motherboard manufacturer listing the CPU as supported by the motherboard and then the CPU not working without a BIOS update I'd appreciate it very much.

You did make some good points, and what I said was no BIOS update will fix those issues (FSB not match etc...) What I said was the Motherboard manufacturer provides a list of supported CPUs and if the OP's CPU is on that list it will be fine (without an update). The OP may need an update however for the GPU to work properly.
