Hi, my friend has an old Hp computer, and he is looking to upgrade his gpu... he has an AMD a8-3850 processor with an integrated graphics card.. and he bought a Radeon 6670, and he has a 300w power supply... he installed the gpu and his computer wont power on... is it his powersupply?

Solution

If you feel like you could have a bad gpu (most likely not) you can call them and ask some questions. but based off that there is only 300 watts of power it is most likely the psu

the 400 watt is the factory minimum so it needs at least a 400 watt power supply so i would get a 450watt and that should work fine and it gives you a little playing room

Factory recommendation is Wattage Requirements for that piece of hardware only. If you are trying to add a helicopter rotor on the top of your case you're going to need a bigger power supply.

no i was saying that the factory know the amount of wattage your computer needs for that one component. then what most people do is they add a couple of watts on to that number

Lets end this peacefully and take it to PM if you need to. Yes if the factory minimum recommendation says 400W then you should consider that the company considers an "average build" for that component to use a total of less than 400W. Of course you should personally take your own components into consideration and factor those in to your decision rather than just going with what the factory recommends.

Use this to see how much wattage you need:

Also, I would agree that the PSU is not giving out enough juice and is the reason it won't turn on.
