A lost cause? Or can i recover my iTunes music?

If you have reinstalled on the drive you have hurt your chances. You can try something like Recuva to see if any files can be recovered, but the more you use the drive the worse the chances get.

If you can recover anything, it has to be recovered to another drive to avoid further overwriting of files.

You may be able to pull files back off your device(ipod/ipad/iphone) as well with third party software.

I can not stress enough how important regular backups are. The price of 1 or more external drives is not too much for keeping extra copies of all your files(imagine if you lost years of family photos.).

Yeah, if your music didn't come from iTunes, the only way to recover it is either using nukemaster's suggestion, realizing you may have already lost the ability to recover some of it by writing to the hard drive, or ripping it from the source CDs again.

Sorry, wish I had a better suggestion.
