I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 64-bit on a previously Windows 7 64-bit Lenovo v570 laptop. I close the lid to put it to sleep and then later when I come back and open it the screen just stays black and I have to do a hard shutdown and reboot it for it work. Is there anyway to make the screen come back on or am I just forced to shutdown every time I leave my laptop. Thanks.

Sometimes an outdated BIOS will mess with sleep mode. I have that exact computer (typing on it now), and I installed a BIOS update just a few nights ago. Give it a shot.
