Does your desktop computer need to be HDMI to be connected to the HDMI on tv. I went to local store for an HDMI cable but then the girl told me I had to buy an SVGA cable? as well as another if I didn't have an HDMI desktop computer, since I wasn't sure I didn't bother with buying any cable. Any help gratefully accepted. My computer is a Lenovo Windows 7 about 3-4 years old.

If your computer has a VGA Cable slot instead, then your going to need to buy a converter. The issue is that you are trying to convert from an analog signal to a digital video signal. A cable can't do this, but a converter can.

Your probably looking for something more like this:

At least that's what I would order, or a similar product for that matter, maybe a better brand. All depends on what your looking to spend. But other than shipping costs the one I posted should be fine. Says it is.
