OK so i would like to set up a rather odd raid. and i'm not sure it will work but it seems to me like it should.

i have 2 x 500Gb HDD's in a RAID0
i also have a 1Tb HDD that is now free

can i keep the two 500gb drives in a RAID0 and then use the 1Tb to make a RAID1 with the existing RAID0???

so i would have 1TB from the RAID0(2x500gig)
and a 1TB drive making a raid 1.

3 drives raid 0+1 1TB total space available.

any help greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Solution
Acronis is good for imaging your operating system drive.
Other drives can just be backed up by manually copying files, or setting up a scheduled task to run robocopy.
This won't work.
There is a RAID 10 standard, which is mirrored (RAID 1) and striped (RAID 0), but this requires four drives of the same size.

You could configure the tree disks as a JBOD RAID volume with capacity of 2TB. Performance would be similar to a single disk. You would have to copy your data off or image the existing volume because all data would be lost.

Consider using RAID 5

RAID 5 requires disks of the same size.
The 1TB disk will be treated as a 500MB disk.
This means data is striped across three disks, with one parity block written for every two data blocks.
This will give a RAID volume of 1TB, and you can afford to lose one of the disks without data loss.
Maybe that will be an acceptable solution.

Indeed it will but to me that's the best option for him if he wants to use RAID. Otherwise using RAID 0 and JBOD for the 1TB with backup software would be best.

OK so seems to me that the best solution for me is just to run a backup software, and back up the RAID0 on too the terabyte drive.

any suggestions on the best software options???

or possibly the best option is just to use the 1TB drive as a backup drive for both my OS drive and the RAID0 which i use as my programs install drive.
