i have an amd fx 8350 and i have read that this cpu is only supposed to support ram up to 1866mhz. but i have 16gb of team group vulcan orange running at 2133 mhz. is this in any way beneficial to me or would it serve me better to clock it down to 1866 and tighten timings? and if so what kind of timings would i be looking at?

btw my build:
amd fx-8350 @4.5ghz @1.43v
Coolermaster seidon 120 push\pull set-up w/ two coolermaster jetflo 120 fans
asus m5a99fx pro r2.0 mb
asus HD7970 direct cu II
Thermaltake SMART series 750W ps
16gb Team Group Vulcan Orange 2133mhz 11-11-11-31 timings
samsung 256gb 840 pro series ssd (os)
Kingston HyperX 3K 120gb ssd
Western Digital 1Tb hdd (storage)
Rosewill Thor V2 case

Solution
I was using IBT and OCCT at first, and they were telling my I was stable, yet BF4 would crash randomly (I know it's got its issues). Fired up Prime95 on blend and failed within 30 min. Bumped up cpu/nb voltage and passed prime for 6 hours, no more issues. Each system is different though so don't take what I'm saying as 100 correct for your particular setup.

It's a glitch, the memory speed doesn't read properly, if it is true that you have 2133 mhz memory running on a cpu that supports only 1866 in dual channel than the memory will automaticly downclock itself, hope i helped :D

what amd processor will support ram faster than 1866? anything on the AM3+ platform? in my bios is says its running at 2133mhz. but thats what i have to go by. Also what is a good benchmark program for my cpu/ram?

Go to the AI Tweaker section of the bios and change it to 1600mhz or bump up your cpu/nb voltage to 1.25-1.3 and test for stability, I would be willing to bet that it isn't stable at that speed on stock cpu/nb voltage.

Im fairly new to all of this so bear with me. i know just enough to be dangerous lol. how would you suggest i test for stability? are some good programs you could recommend? how can i know for sure it is running at this speed besides just looking in bios? would it even benefit me to run it at this speed with the differences in timings i would see running at say 1866mhz, or even 1600mhz?

I've been using prime95, seems to be the toughest test for these 83xx series IMO. There are some programs that do benefit from the higher speed RAM, Battlefield 4 being one of them. Otherwise you probably won't notice much of a difference and it may not be worth the extra heat to you. I think it feels snappier around the OS but that isn't something I can benchmark.

edit: Prime95 on blend test makes my overclock test runs fail when Intel Burn Test and OCCT pass, that's why I've switched to prime95 as my primary stability test.

I beg to differ...Prime95 is one of the only programs that shows instability RAM wise for me. Even memtest86 has passed me when I've failed on P95 when I had my RAM not tweaked properly. To each his own just giving my personal experiences.

Thank you for your replies. Bf4 is the main game I play right now. That and black flag. I have experienced some crashes in bf4 as well. Not to mention it won't play well on high or ultra settings..... Plugs right away at medium. With all that my CPU never read above 45c. What would hold me back from those high settings in my rig though?

Honestly, what I would do is revert your cpu speed back to stock settings (4Ghz) with a vcore 1 notch above your stock VID. That way you can rule out cpu core from any failed stability test. Then if you want to keep your ram running at 2133, set it to 2133 and your HT and CPU/NB to 2200mhz to rule out HT/CPUNB instability. Bump your cpu/nb voltage to 1.25v. Then run prime95 on blend for an hour or two. Keep an eye on your package and cpu temps, they get pretty hot with prime95 after 20 min or so. I have the same motherboard so your welcome to ask and I'll help however I can. Just take small steps.
