Hi

First step is to check hard drive for physical damage
Most Manufacturers (except Toshiba) provide diagnostic software.

Seagates Diagnostics (bootable ISO image) will test other brands
Western Digital DLG Windows diagnostics will test other brands

Once you know if you have hardware problems or not you can take the next step
If that determines there is no physical damage you can look at recovery software such as TestDisk / PhotoRec
free from
http://www.cgsecurity.org/

It can scan hard disk for header of picture files (jpg etc) and recover files to another drive

How important is your data ?
how much can you afford ?
(cost may depend on amount of data on drive)

If you have lots of money & lack confidence get a professional...

If drive is not physically damaged you are unlikely to make things worse than they are if you never write to the external disk.

do not run chkdsk until above tests and data recovery are completed.

If disk has physical damage then you need to replace it
(even if the diagnostic software says it can repair the damage)

glad to read the reply..so i have seagate 250 gb hdd chkdsk..i run it earlier did not fix any thing...if i find some physical damage.. Then also..can i recover data..main data is just a folder having photos and some videos..i dont think that it was overwritten since i didmt run clean all nor it was able to format..i dont understand what cost..i dont think that i wld have to take it to pros..so i must first run seagate diagn..right?

Hi

Seagate diagnostics will determine if the disk has bad sectors and if it passes it is ok to start recovery

Recovery may well work BUT file names may be lost if directory and index structure can not be found .

Test Disk can sometimes recover partition information.

best of luck
