How is HP's build quality?

I've heard many conflicting opinions on the build of HP products. I've been saving and searching for a very long time and it's the very best option for me. I'm not asking for recommendations, not now: i just want to know if i can rely on a HP laptop.

Now the reason I've heard so many conflicting opinions is probably because they are just opinions. What i need now is facts: will i be able to rely on a HP laptop for several years? This year, 2014, will a HP break on me?

Working in retail, seeing what laptops got returned, and working in computer repair, there is really no pattern to it. Shop based on specs, and personal preference of look and feel. The rest of it is luck by manufacturing.
