Hey there! This is my first post in this forum, so don't spit me if i missed the right section, please.
I'm trying to assemble a pc with the componnts of an older one that has been dumped, i would put togheter something suitable as a media-center (something that can support hd video) and as workstation (office etc).

The components that I've right now are:
Mobo -> 939Dual-SATA2 -> http://www.asrock.com/mb/ULi/939Dual-SATA2/
CPU -> AMD Athlon 64
RAM -> 2 x 1GB [dusty sticks of misc provenience]
GPU -> hd 4650 hm 64 bit pci-e 512MB [still haven't researched what model is actually, this is what is reported on a label]
Power unit -> A recent power unit, not much to be said on this.

What I think it's a good idea to install
GPU: [Replacing the old ones]
http://www.amazon.co.uk/GeForce-Graphics-Express-Profile-Cooling/dp/B008A1C2AM/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1390122223&sr=1-1&keywords=nvidiA+2GB
RAM: [Replacing the old ones]
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-1600MHz-HyperX-Memory-Module/dp/B00433L23O/ref=sr_1_sc_9?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1390126890&sr=1-9-spell&keywords=ram+kingstone
HDD:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1390126958&sr=1-1&keywords=WD+1TB
CASE:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/CiT-Callisto-Mesh-Micro-ATX-Case/dp/B00DOYT4MO/ref=sr_1_11?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1390127109&sr=1-11&keywords=micro+tower

Opinions? Something that i'm doing wrong? Compatibility issues?
Will i be able to run windows 8 on this sistem?

The memory you picked out is DDR3 where as your motherboard supports DDR. Also, the case you chose is micro ATX and your motherboard is full size ATX so that won't be compatible. The GPU you chose is very low end. Yes, Windows 8 is compatible.

You won't be able to put DDR3 RAM in that mobo. And that CPU will be useless.

You'd be better off doing a brand new build around an APU or Pentium/Celeron. Only thing I'd consider reusing is the GPU.

EDIT:

I'd trash the PSU, unless it's a decent unit. A bad PSU can destroy the rest of your system. What is it?

This is one of my main doubts, how i understand if my mobo supports a certain tipe of memory? In the online manual of this mobo it says that i can use ddr3 memory

Memory - Dual Channel DDR memory technology
- 4 x DDR DIMM slots
- Supports DDR400 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Max. capacity of system memory: 4GB*

The link you provided suggests that it can only support DDR as seems above.

The point is that I've that cpu for free, and it was working fine with the mobo, exactly why you suggest to "downgrade" to a pentium cpu?

The PSU still does it's work, i've tried it and and it's ok.

Probably i'll reuse the GPU.
In your list the ram you suggested is still DDR3

There is no way that even a Celeron would be a downgrade. Modern celerons and pentiums are dual-core chips in the 2.5-3.5 GHz range. Your Athlon is a ~10-15 year old single core chip that performs far worse in terms of instructions per clock cycle, plus it's probably not broken the 2GHz barrier. An entry-level smartphone would kick it into next week.

I'm suggesting a new CPU, MB, and RAM because if you replace one you pretty much need to replace them all. Also, DDR1 is quite pricey because you can't mass produce it as well, plus nobody makes it.

A crap PSU can destroy everything else in your PC. Then again, with your current components, that's probably a good thing.

Yeah, it will be DDR slot number 3.

@Someone Somewhere

Ok, I didn't understand that your proposition was the change of the set mobo-cpu-ram, because in the list you wrote I jumped the mobo line :heink:
The point is that i was just trying to build something that could be used as a media reader, or a spare wheel pc, taking advantage from the parts that i listed above, no matter what a pice of rubbish i'll give birth to.
My problem was that i had not a cleat idea of what components would actually work on the mobo, and if it could possibly fit into a little case, such as the mini ATX i had in mind.
And as Computer__GUY said before, it won't.
